What is the Gospel?
J. I. Packer stated the best summary of the Gospel I have ever read - "Adoption Through Propitation"!
However, it is possible that an unbeliever may not understand the simple meaning of these three words. So, for more on these three great words, send me a quick request through my Contact link above.
Pastor Tom Rempel of Faith Bible Church shared this clear and to-the-point definition of the Gospel.
You are guilty before God by your birth
and by your behavior.
On the other side of the grave is a forever heaven and a forever hell with an uncrossable chasm between.
Your sin has separated you from your Creator.
But God in grace as placed a bridge across that chasm.
It is the cross of Christ Jesus.
(1 Corinthians 1:18)
But you must cross it on this side of the grave.
What must you do to be saved?
Believe in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ... period!
(I have added the Biblical cross references to Pastor Tom's answer above)
My good friend Rev. Mike Costigan shared the following, which gives a very good an indepth answer.
"God teaches us in 'The Holy Bible' that the entire human race, after Adam and Eve, is born in sin and has a rebellious sin nature. This is why we are selfish, and covet, and steal and kill. All mankind became separated from God and out-of-control in sin, after Satan caused Adam to sin against God. We are separated from God forever, and we will all end up 'existing' in eternal death forever and ever, unless we receive 'Salvation' which is the free gift of God. God knew that Satan would use his free will, and in rebellion, choose to sin.
God also knew that Satan would cause many angels and humans to be deceived and follow him into sin and death.
But God was not caught by surprise. Not at all. He solved the problem of sin and death. He has also provided complete forgiveness and eternal life with peace and happiness in His Presence. How did He do this? How did God provide a great Salvation and sin-solution for the eternity of the human race?
He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place. Jesus died for you, so that you can live forever. You see, the payment for sin is eternal death. We are all sinners and therefore will die forever. But Jesus Christ, the eternal Son and Almighty God Himself could come to earth and be born as a man and die in our place. Jesus is an innocent man without sin, and could therefore offer his sinless life as full payment for all those who would believe in Him as God, and receive Him as their Savior. Jesus is the only one who can pay this price, as He is the only one without sin who ever lived on earth. Satan didn't plan on this, believe me. Jesus destroyed him forever.
We know His (Jesus) sacrifice was acceptable to God because on the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead in victory over sin and death forever. Jesus stayed on earth for over 40 days after His Resurrection and was seen by over 500 people. Many witnessed his bodily return to heaven also.
So THE GOSPEL, or 'GOOD NEWS', is that God has sent a Savior to save your immortal soul. You are that important to Him. Jesus, the Son of God, is that SAVIOR...in fact the name JESUS means SAVIOR.
You can have all the sin of your life forgiven and remembered 'no more' by God. You do not have to die and suffer forever in eternity in hell fire with Satan. You can be restored to a peaceful relationship with God your eternal Father, thru Jesus His Divine Son, and go to Heaven to enjoy HIM forever. This can happen right now on earth!
This is the GOSPEL or GOOD NEWS!!!
Don't wait another moment to receive Jesus as your Savior. If you sincerely invite Him into your life, He will enter your 'heart' and reside in you forever. If you choose NOT to accept Jesus, you will die in your sins forever. John 8.
God tells us this in His New Covenant: "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as The Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved". Romans 10:9,10. This is God's special promise for everyone who invites His Son Jesus into their life.
Will you do it now? Great! Then speak this prayer to God and to His Son:
Dear Lord Jesus...thank you for dying on the cross for me...I am a sinner and like every man I need salvation...wash me in your blood...take away all my sin...I wish to receive you by Faith...please come into my heart...come in today and please come to stay. Thank you Lord Jesus !
(You have now received salvation...now I will pray to God for you).
Lord Jesus, thank you that _________________ has asked you for forgiveness and salvation. I know that now they are 'born-again'. Thank you that you have received them into your kingdom forever, and that their name is written down in THE LAMB'S BOOK OF LIFE. We know that this action is real and true as God Himself has promised this...and that His Word can never be broken. Thank you Father, thank you Lord Jesus, thank you Holy Spirit.
In gratitude to Almighty God...pray to Him every day and read the Holy Bible every day. Stay in a loving and abiding relationship with Him. Try to join a good Bible believing and preaching New Testament Church where you can learn about Jesus Christ.
May Almighty Bless you...The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
In Love of Jesus...Rev. Michael Costigan"
