for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23 NKJV

What is Man's Problem?

Speaking of the hu man race, man's problem can be summed up in one word, "SIN"

Y ou may say... "that sounds way too simple.  It has to be much more than just our sins.  Anyway, I haven't done anything really bad, my little sins don't make that much difference."

To more fully understand  the problem of sin we have to consider at least four things:
          #1 - What is sin?
          #2 - The universality of sin.  (We are all sinners)
          #3 - How does God feel about sin?
          #4 - The consequences of sin.

#1 - What is Sin?
Sin is "any want of conformity unto or transgression of the law of God" (1 John 3:4 ; Romans 4:15 ), in the inward state and habit of the soul, as well as in the outward conduct of the life, whether by omission or commission ( Romans 6:12-17 ; Romans 7:5-24 ).

It is "not a mere violation of the law of our constitution, nor of the system of things, but an offence against a personal Lawgiver and Moral Governor who vindicates His law with penalties.

#2 - The Universality of Sin.
We are all sinners.  Romans 3:23 states "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,".

In Romans 3:10-18 we are told...
     "There is none righteous, no, not one;
      There is none who understands;
      There is none who seeks after God.
      They have all turned aside;
      They have together become unprofitable;
      There is none who does good, no, not one".
     " Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit";
     "The poison of asps is under their lips";
     "Whose mouth
is full of cursing and bitterness."
     "Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Destruction and misery are in their ways;

      And the way of peace they have not known."
     "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

Take some time and think about God's commandments.  Have you ever lied?  If you have ever said anything that isn't true, that it is a lie.  Have you ever hated someone?  Jesus said that to hate someone is the same as murder in our hearts. ( 1 John 3:15 )  Have you ever looked at another person with desire to whom you aren't married?  Jesus said that is the same as adultery. ( Matthew 5:28 )

                          How have you done with God's rules for your life?
                          How is the world doing?

#3 - How does God feel about Sin?
God hates sin.  Romans 6:23 states "For the wages of sin is death".

Jesus taught that  "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!"   Matthew 18:6-7 NKJV

#4 - The consequences of sin.
Because of sin, we are physically going to die. ( Genesis 3:19 )  We are already spiritually dead in our unrepentant sin. ( Colossians 2:13 )  We have no relationship with God and our relationships with our fellow man are broken. ( Isaiah 59:2 )  We are insensitive to God's Word.   ( 1 John 1:10 )  We are unrighteous before God's Law. ( 1 Corinthians 6:9,10 )  We are unable to do God's Will. ( Romans 8:7,8 )  We are unfit for God's presence. ( Genesis 3:8 )

    We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are

eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knows the
    power of Your anger? For as the fear of You,
so is Your wrath. So teach
us to number our days, That we may
    gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:9-12 NKJV

When Adam and Eve sinned, God drove them out of the Garden of Eden and placed a cherubim at the entrance to keep them from returning.

    Therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He
    drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which
    turned every way,
Genesis 3:23-24 NKJV

God is patient and does not want anyone to die in our sin.

    The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not
    willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV

However, there is a limit to His patience.  There will be a day when His patience runs out.

    Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,
Colossians 3:6 NKJV

Until that day, God is storing up his wrath, much like a great dam.  There are times when he releases some of his wrath to get our attention.  And, sometimes we listen and other times we don't.  For the most part, we as a whole world, do not listen to God.

There will be a day when God pours out his wrath on the earth!

    Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the bowls of the
    wrath of God on the earth."
Revelation 16:1 NKJV

Take some time to read Romans 1:18-32 below.  Does this sound like our world today?

     18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who
    suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God
    has shown
it to them.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being
    understood by the things that are made,His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

    21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile
    in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
    23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man - and birds and
    four-footed animals and creeping things.

     24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies
    among themselves,
25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature
    rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

     26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for
    what is against nature.
27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust
    for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their
    error which was due.

     28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their k nowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to
    do those things which are not fitting;
29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness,
    covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness;
they are whisperers,

30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of
    God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of
    those who practice them.

If this doesn't sound like "Man's Problem" to you then you should read it again and think about it carefully for a long time.  Remember in eternity, we will have a very long time to think about it...

e-ter-ni-ty [i turn tee]
noun
1. infinite time: time without beginning or end lost for all eternity
2. timelessness: the condition, quality, or fact of being without beginning or end
3. religion timelessness after death: a timeless state conceived as being experienced after death

In summary our problem is:

Our sin has separated us from God.
     But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that
     He will not hear.
Isaiah 59:2 NKJV

Most don't give God the glory due Him and many don't even acknowledge God.
     because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in
     their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:21 NKJV

We are unable to earn our eternal salvation through good works, althought that is what most believe is the way it must be done.
     For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of
     works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV

Any good works we don't do unto the Lord are like filthy rags.
     And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags;
Isaiah 64:6 NKJV

The wrath of God is being stored up for "The Day of the Lord".
     He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but
     the wrath of God abides on him."
John 3:36 NKJV

      The great day of the Lord is near; It is near and hastens quickly. The noise of the day of the Lord is bitter;
     There the mighty men shall cry out. That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of
     devastation and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of
     trumpet and alarm Against the fortified cities And against the high towers. "I will bring distress upon men,
     And they shall walk like blind men, Because they have sinned against the Lord; Their blood shall be
     poured out like dust, And their flesh like refuse." Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver
     them In the day of the Lord's wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He
     will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.
Zephaniah 1:14-18 NKJV

We all need help!

So is our condition hopeless?  Can we ever do enough "good" to "outweight the bad" of our sin nature?

     For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, Yet your iniquity is marked before Me," says the
     Lord God.
Jeremiah 2:22 NKJV

The answer is no.  We can not do enough good to offset just one "little" sin against a perfectly Holy God, let alone the multitude of sins we have committed over a lifetime.  God doesn't grade on the curve, he demands perfect righteousness and we aren't perfectly righteous. ( Romans 3:12 )

Knowing this we must understand that we need something more that our own efforts to get right with God. ( Ephesians 2:8-9 )
