Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Exodus 15:11 NKJV

What is God like?

So, having come to the belief that there is a God and that He gave us a way to know Him, by The Bible, which we can trust as truthful, we have a way to know Him and learn what He desires of us.

God has many attributes that we need to understand so we can more fully understand what God is like.  For one thing, God tells us He is holy and He wants us to be holy.

"For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall
      be holy; for I am
holy."
Leviticus 11:44 NKJV

"...but as He who called you is
holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is
      written,
"Be holy, for I am holy."
1 Peter 1:15-16 NKJV

Holy means "set apart".  God wants us to be set apart for his purpose, like Jesus, we are called to be set apart and like Jesus.

Here are several more of God's attributes:

Attribute

God is Self-Existent

Scripture

Exodus 3:13-14 13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

Psalms 50:10-12 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

God is Self-Sufficient

God is Eternal

Deuteronomy 33:27 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!'
Psalms 90:2 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

1 Kings 8:22-27 22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven 23 and said: "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below-you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 24 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it-as it is today. 25 "Now LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, 'You shall never fail to have a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons are careful in all they do to walk before me as you have done.' 26 And now, O God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David my father come true. 27 "But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!
Jeremiah 23:24 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the LORD. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the LORD.

God is Infinite

God is Omnipresent
(God is everywhere)

Psalms 139:7-12 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

God is Omnipotent
(God is all powerful)

Genesis 18:14 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."
Revelation 19:6 6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

God is Omniscient
(God knows everything)

Psalms 139:2-6 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in - behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Isaiah 40:13-14 13 Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor? 14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding?

God is All Wise

Proverbs 3:19 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
1 Timothy 1:17 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

God is Immutable
(God doesn't change)

Hebrews 1:10-12 10 He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

God is Sovereign
(God is in control of everything)

Isaiah 46:9-11 9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. 10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. 11 From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about;

God is Incomprehensible
( Man can not understand everything about God )

Job 11:7-19 7 "Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? 8 They are higher than the heavens-what can you do? They are deeper than the depths of the grave-what can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. 10 "If he comes along and confines you in prison and convenes a court, who can oppose him? 11 Surely he recognizes deceitful men; and when he sees evil, does he not take note? 12 But a witless man can no more become wise than a wild donkey's colt can be born a man. 13 "Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him, 14 if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, 15 then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and without fear. 16 You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. 17 Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning. 18 You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. 19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favor.
Romans 11:33 33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!

God is Holy

Leviticus 19:2 2 "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
1 Peter 1:15 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;

God is Righteous and Just

Psalms 119:137 137 Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right.

God is True

John 17:3 3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
Titus 1:1-2 1:1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness- 2 a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,

God is Faithful

Deuteronomy 7:9 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.
Psalms 89:1-2 I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

God is Light

James 1:17 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
1 John 1:5 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

God is Good

Psalms 107:8 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,

God is Merciful

Psalms 103:8-17 8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children

God is Gracious

Psalms 111:4 4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate.
1 Peter 5:10 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

God is Love

John 3:16 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God is Spirit

John 4:24 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

God is One

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Isaiah 44:6-8 6 "This is what the LORD says - Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. 7 Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come - yes, let him foretell what will come. 8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one."

God is Trinity
(Three Persons - One God)

Matthew 28:19 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
2 Corinthians 13:14 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Can any man purely have even one of these attributes? I don't think any man is self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, infinite, omnipresent, omnipotent or omniscient.

You might say that Solomon was wise - but in the manner of God - I dare say no. Just look at one area - how many wives and concubines he had. As history proved, this was not wise since many of his wives lead him to idolatry, away form God who gave him wisdom in the first place (1 Kings 11:3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray). Man certainly is not immutable as we change our minds all the time.

Are we sovereign - in control - only at times and then not for long?  One might say we're incomprehensible; I think we may not even comprehend ourselves at times.

We can be holy but not of ourselves. We are set apart in Jesus Christ and as such we are holy if we are in Christ. I think we get the picture, we're not doing very well at attaining the attributes of God.

We should look at some of these attributes and understand why they are so important in our God. So why is it important to have a God that is unchangeable (immutable)?  If God changed we would never know what he was thinking - today.  What if God was like some of us who are in a good mood some days and a bad mood on others?  If God had good and bad moods, we would have to consider if it was a good time to bring a problem to God, like we sometimes do with certain people.

What if God wasn't always merciful or just or good or true?  That wouldn't be the God I know, that would be the devil. Actually, that is Satan.  He has all the anti-attributes of God.  What amazes me is that some people actually worship Satan.  Sometimes people buy into his lies and make them their standard for truth.

God is holy.  What does it mean when we say that God is holy?  Nelson's Bible Dictionary defines holy as - Moral and ethical wholeness or perfection; freedom from moral evil.  Holiness is one of the essential elements of God's nature required of His people.  Holiness may also be rendered "sanctification" or "godliness."  The word holy denotes that which is "sanctified" or "set apart" for divine service.  God calls us to be holy but we can't be holy through our own efforts.

God hates sin.  Sin separates man from God. We are told that God demands reverential fear and respect.

Psalms 111:10 - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom
Job 28:28 -
The fear of the Lord-that is wisdom
Proverbs 1:7 -
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge
Proverbs 9:10 -
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom
Proverbs 15:33 -
The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom
Micah 6:9 -
The LORD is calling to the city- and to fear your name is wisdom

The fear of the LORD is not being afraid of God; it is defined as a feeling of reverence, awe, and respect.

Because God is perfectly holy, His law demands perfect holiness.  A holy God hates sin.
Leviticus 11:44 -
I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.
1 Samuel 6:20 -
Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God?
Joshua 24:19 -
He is a holy God
Hebrews 12:14 -
Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy without holiness no
                           one will see the Lord.
1 Peter 1:16 - for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy
