work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV

What does God require of us?

Does God require that we give everything away to the poor, live as a monk in a monastery or go about doing good works to obtain salvation?

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act
justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

No, we are to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.

Wycliffe's Bible Commentary states:

What Jehovah requires applies to all men of all time, perpetually and unchangeably:

     (1) To do justly. That is, to live right in relation to one's fellow man in social, political, and
           industrial affairs.
     (2) To love mercy. That is, to exhibit that quality of steadfast loving-kindness which is seen in
           Jehovah and comes from him.
     (3) To walk humbly with thy God. That is, to have humility and devotion to God through faith.
Such sacrifices-of right attitudes and upright character are acceptable to Jehovah.

Jesus was asked which of the 10 Commandments is the greatest. His answer was...

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 'Love
your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
tells us a great deal about how we should live. We are called on to Love the Lord our God with
all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind. After that we are to love our neighbor
     as we love ourselves.
Matthew 22:37-40

How do we show our love for God and our neighbor?  We might consider the following five steps as a starting point.

Step One:
The first step is daily communication with God through Prayer.  Prayer is the way we talk to God.
You do not need a special vocabulary to pray.  You can simply speak to God as you would to your best friend.  The more time you spend with God in prayer, the more intimate your relationship will be with Him.  And remember there is no problem great or small that He cannot handle.  If it's important to you it's important to Him.

Step Two:
The second step is daily Bible reading.  The Bible is God's primary way of communicating with us.  It is our spiritual food.  If you do not eat physical food, you will starve physically.  In much the same way, if you do not eat spiritual food, you will starve spiritually.

I would like to recommend that you begin your Bible reading by reading one chapter from the Gospel of John each day.  This will take perhaps 10 to 15 minutes.  As you read you will begin to experience the joy of having God speak to you personally through His Word.  If you do not understand something simply ask another follower of the Lord Jesus Christ to help you.  Remember, you are no longer on your own you are a part of the family of God.

Step Three:
The third step is active participation in a local Church.  The church is a place where you can worship God and make Him the focus of your life.  It is also a place for you to have fellowship with other believers.  Ask God for someone in His church with whom you can form a special bond of friendship, as in a fireplace many logs burning together create heat and warmth, but a log by itself quickly dies out.

Step Four:
The fourth step is Discipleship.  A disciple is a learner or a follower.  As we follow Jesus our goal should be to become more like Him.  When you become involved in a local church, look for a Bible study or class where you can learn to grow in your relationship with God.

Step Five:
The fifth step is Witness.  Beyond a doubt the most important experience in anyone's life is to receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.  I would not exchange this priceless treasure for all the riches in the whole world, because Jesus is that precious to me, it is my joy to share Him with others.  You too will experience this joy as you share with others how they can have a relationship with God here and now and live with Him in heaven forever.

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Mark 8:35 NKJV
