Is there a cost to following Christ?
There is a cost involved in following Christ. While salvation is absolutely free and includes everything we need for spiritual life, we also must understand that there is a cost of discipleship that results from salvation.
The world didn't accept him and it won't readily accept us. We are called to persevere. We have a Helper, the Holy Spirit and we have the Word of God; the promise that "He will never leave us". What more can we ask?
Obeying the Lord can cost us our freedom, certain relationships, our independence, and maybe even our lives. Christ Himself did not hesitate to tell people about the cost of discipleship.
Mark provides us with a look at the the cost to following Christ...
When He had called the people to
with His disciples also, He said to them,
desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the
gospel's will save it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
For whoever is ashamed of
Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be
ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
Mark 8:34-38 NKJV
Those of the world will not love the Christian unless they are a Christian.
Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they
persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey
yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know
the One who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty
of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me hates my
Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be
guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and
my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'
The message of the Gospel is does not promise us peace, prosperity or worldly acceptance in this life. Remember, the world did not accept Christ either during his time in it.
